Tahune Airwalk

Category: National Parks
Submitted by gail

Within Tasmania’s deep, southeast is a place time seems to have forgotten. In the rugged landscape of the Tahune Forest Reserve is a forest airwalk where serenity and magnificent views capture the peacefulness of the Huon Valley.

A memorable walk along the 671-meter trek takes the visitor through spectacular treetops where the 40-meter Tahune Airwalk Bridge is a centerpiece. The Airwalk varies from 25 meters to 45 meters above the forest canopy. Views from here overlook stately Tasmanian World Heritage area and trees such as the Sassafras, Blackwood, Celery Top Pine, Myrtle and the towering Stringybarks. Also viewable from the Tahune Airwalk Bridge is the Huon and Picton River confluence, distant mountains and beautiful natural, wild forests.

One can leave the Airwalk Bridge and continue their magical journey strolling through riparian vegetation and admire ancient Pines, which takes about 20 minutes before coming to two swinging bridges that cross the Huon and Picton Rivers. The McKay track takes about an hour to walk and it eventually leads back to the Visitor Center where refreshments and wines can be savoured and gifts such as clothes and local artwork can be bought. The Visitor Center has maintained a natural theme in its building with stone, glass, timber and natural views to the Huon River. To cater for the many tourists who come to the Airwalk daily the Visitor Center is open seven days a week special holidays. Other adventurous highlights for the visitor is hang gliding with Eagle Glide and rafting down the Huon River.
